TEXTS THAT LIE

Crooks are using phone messaging to steal your info-and your money

(Per AARP Bulletin March 2021, page 30) here are some examples of scam texts:

Example: Grants are available for financial assistance this year. They don't need to be paid back.

Response: If you get a text from anyone outside your circle of contacts, look for red flags like misspellings and spacing issues.

Example: NYC DMV: Action required for MyDMV the Real ID requirement will soon be mandatory for all domestic travel. Update your mailing and contact information for expedited compliance with new ID regulations. Visit...

Response: Delete texts you can't verify. If it looks like a message from your bank, call the number listed on your statement. Or if it's supposedly your credit card company, call the number on the back of your card.

Don't ever call numbers in the text message.
